Urumqi, Xinjiang. Uighurs are the largest ethnic group in Xinjiang. Historically they have been seen as outsiders and have not benefitted to the same extent as their Han neighbors. Increased internal migration of Han Chinese has increased tensions in this province. Uighurs themselves see their history and culture as closely allied with their Central Asian neighbors.
