jpg  The city of Korla Xinjiang rises out of the Taklamakan desert. Korla is quickly becoming the second city of Xinjiang. This region sits on top of China?s largest oil reserve and hence is strategically important to the countries growth.  In less then twenty years the city has grown from 100000 to over 420,000 people.  The region has become a center for mineral extraction and cotton farming both of which require large amounts of water.  The city draws its water from the Bosten lake which is fed my mountain glaciers. Those glaciers are melting rapidly and putting the prospects for continued growth in question
